[Satureia hortensis, Satureia montana]

Both summer savory and winter savory have vivid, peppery-tasting leaves that enliven soups, sandwiches, and fish dishes, and both have the pleasing characteristic of growing well in dry and rocky soil. Both feature purple flowers and were once considered to be herbs of the satyrs and therefore conducive to lust. ¶ Pregnant women were forbidden to eat savory of either ilk. The juice of both savories was used by medieval ladies as a bleach for tanned skin.

There is very little difference between the two herbs, except that summer savory is a beneficial companion plant for beans, and winter savory isn’t.
